WASHINGTON, December 10. /TASS/. A decision on the future of Russian bases in Syria is for the Syrian people to make, US State Department Spokesman Matthew Miller told reporters.
"We don't have any information about the status of those bases and what the incoming Syrian regime may or may not do with respect to them," he said. "With respect to the United States position on those facilities, it is ultimately a decision for the Syrian people to make not for the people of the United States."
Syria’s armed opposition units started a large-scale offensive on government troops in the Aleppo and Idlib governorates on November 27. By the evening of December 7, they seized several large cities, including Aleppo, Hama, Deir ez-Zor, Daraa, and Homs. On December 8, they entered Damascus while government troops withdrew from the city. Bashar Assad resigned as president and fled the country. A Kremlin source told TASS that Assad is in Moscow and has been granted asylum in Russia.
