US officials praise Russia's new ambassador to US — newspaper

Washington handed Moscow an official note with an agreement to appoint Darchiev as ambassador after the talks on February 27 in Istanbul

WASHINGTON, March 7. /TASS/. American officials have a positive assessment of Russia's new ambassador to the US Alexander Darchiev, The Washington Post reported.

"Russia just appointed Alexander Darchiev, an experienced diplomat who gets solid marks from US officials, as its ambassador to Washington," the newspaper’s columnist David Ignatius wrote.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree appointing Darchiev as Russian ambassador to Washington. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier said that the agreement to ensure the prompt appointment of Russian ambassadors to the United States and the United States to Russia was reached at the talks between Moscow and Washington in Riyadh on February 18. The previous Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly Antonov, completed his mission in October 2024.

Washington handed Moscow an official note with an agreement to appoint Darchiev as ambassador after the talks on February 27 in Istanbul. This was the result of a renewed dialogue between Russia and the US on the normalization of relations, which, according to Moscow, is primarily aimed at restoring full diplomatic work.

Darchiev, 64, is a graduate of Lomonosov Moscow State University and a candidate of historical sciences. He has been in the diplomatic service since 1992 and speaks English and French. For ten years (in 1997-2002 and 2005-2010) he worked at the Russian embassy in Washington. His boss at the time, and now Kremlin aide Yury Ushakov, said that Darchiev was a qualified specialist with an excellent understanding of American affairs. Both Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and Deputy Foreign Minister Sergey Ryabkov praised the new ambassador's professionalism.
