Petition to switch Ukrainian to Latin registered on Zelensky’s website

If the petition gathers 25,000 signatures, the Ukrainian President will have to provide a response

KIEV, June 7. /TASS/. A public request to Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky to switch the Ukrainian language to Latin alphabet has been registered on the presidential website Tuesday.

The author of the petition underscored that rejection of the Cyrillic alphabet "will make it possible to completely cut language ties with Russia." If the petition gathers 25,000 signatures, the head of state will have to provide a response. Currently, 49 people have signed the petition.

The idea of switching to Latin was proposed in Ukraine before. In particular, National Security and Defense Council Secretary Alexey Danilov said in an interview that he personally advocates rejecting the Cyrillic alphabet. This statement sparked an intense discussion among politicians and public figures.

Following the 2014 coup, a "war on memorials" began in Ukraine, after a law on de-communization was adopted. The law implies dismantling of memorials and renaming of toponyms, connected to Soviet history. Lately, Ukrainian authorities started "fighting" with everything Russian. Monuments and memorial boards, connected to Russia and the USSR are being dismantled across the country. On April 6, the Verkhovna Rada registered a bill that prohibits giving geographical names that are connected with Russia, its history and figures.
