HAIKOU /China/, 5 July. /TASS/. Airports in the southern Chinese province of Hainan plan to serve about 9.1 million passengers during the summer tourist season from July 1 to August 31, the Hainan International Communication Network (HICN) reported.
The island's 11 airports are expected to handle about 63,000 flights during the period. Meilan Airport in Haikou, Phoenix Airport in Sanya and Boao Airport in Tsunhai - the three largest airports in Hainan - plan to handle up to 52,000 flights, and passenger traffic is expected to exceed 7.9 million.
According to HICN, Haikou Meilan International Airport has recently completed a major upgrade of some of its infrastructure. This includes six mother and child rooms in Terminals 1 and 2. In addition, Greater Bay Airlines plans to launch a Haikou-Hong Kong flight at this airport in mid-July, with additional flights to Moscow and Seattle to follow later.
As for Sanya Phoenix International Airport, it has resumed international flights to and from Krasnoyarsk, increased the frequency of flights to major Chinese cities, and switched to wide-body aircraft for flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou and a number of other destinations. The airport management also recruited volunteers to assist travelers at check-in and in special passenger service areas. In addition, a "green corridor" was opened to serve freshmen who have passed university entrance exams.
Boao International Airport, for its part, opened a service station staffed with qualified personnel to assist first-time travelers, as well as special check-in counters to provide priority boarding services
