About 1,900 birds affected by fuel oil rescued in Anapa after tanker crash

KRASNODAR, January 1. /TASS/. About 1,900 birds affected by a fuel oil spill after a tanker crash in the Black Sea have been rescued in Anapa, the crisis management center in the Krasnodar Region has said.

After the crash of two tankers near the Kerch Strait fuel oil spots on the coast of Anapa and Temryuk district in the Krasnodar Region and pollution of the water surface have been identified. Bird rescue centers have been deployed. Feathered birds affected by the oil spill are washed and transferred to rehabilitation centers and zoos.

"As of January 1, 1,861 birds have been rescued. Of these, 1,470 were transferred to rehabilitation centers," the report reads.

The tankers Volgoneft-212 and Volgoneft-239 wrecked on December 15. One sailor died, while all others were evacuated. According to emergency response services, the tankers were carrying about 9,200 tons of fuel oil. The spill of oil products caused a disaster in the Black Sea. The elimination of the consequences is underway.

The coastline in the Krasnodar Region, polluted with fuel oil, was divided into sectors. All were assigned to local municipalities. Each delegated 100 volunteers to eliminate the consequences. According to the head of Crimea Sergey Aksyonov, most of the fuel oil has drifted towards the Krasnodar territory. In Crimea, the consequences of the spill will be eliminated before the start of the holiday season.
