Kremlin criticizes French president’s nuclear rhetoric

"Moreover, France is already ready to use its nuclear weapons for security and so on," Dmitry Peskov emphasized

MOSCOW, March 6. /TASS/. French President Emmanuel Macron's nuclear rhetoric is very confrontational and gives the impression that Paris is looking for a continuation of the war, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in response to a TASS question.

"If you read Macron's statement, you get the impression that France is actually looking for a continuation of the war," the spokesman told reporters.

"Moreover, France is already ready to use its nuclear weapons for security and so on. This is already such nuclear rhetoric, this is a claim to nuclear leadership in Europe. So it is very, very confrontational," he emphasized.

When asked whether the Kremlin agrees with the statement by Elon Musk, who runs the US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), that the leaders of many European countries "want a forever war," Peskov noted that the statement is true with regard to Macron's words. "If Musk said this after reading the text of Mr. Macron's speech, then probably yes," the Kremlin spokesman said.

Earlier, Musk wrote on his X page that EU leaders "want a forever war." He emphasized that if guided by their logic, the conflict will never end.

The day before, in his address to the public, Macron discussed the growing threats to Europe and the nation, including purported ones from Russia. This is how he justified the need for increasing the nation's defense budget beyond the previously approved plan. He also reiterated his intention to continue supporting Ukraine in its conflict with Russia and promised to open a discussion on expanding the national nuclear deterrent to other European nations, in response to a call by Friedrich Merz, a candidate for the German chancellorship.
