EU leaders, Trump discuss potential tightening of sanctions on Russia — Macron

According to the French President, the discussion addressed a scenario where no results would be achieved and Russia would be unwilling to take part in the process

PARIS, August 19. /TASS/. US President Donald Trump and European leaders have discussed the possibility of tightening sanctions on Russia, French President Emmanuel Macron told reporters.

"As you understand, it’s not what he [Trump] necessarily wants, even though he has imposed the so-called secondary sanctions against India, particularly over its purchases and processing of Russian oil. I think what he wants is to make commitments and he sincerely believes that it can yield results. However, the discussion addressed a scenario where no results would be achieved and Russia would be unwilling to take part in the process. This was when he expressed a desire to impose what he calls primary and secondary tariffs, but what in fact is what we call sanctions," Macron said following talks in Washington.
