Iran willing to suspend nuclear program to make deal with US — newspaper

According to two officials, Iran would prefer a proposal to create a regional consortium to produce nuclear power

NEW YORK, February 3. /TASS/. Tehran is willing to shut down or suspend its nuclear program in order to reach an agreement with Washington and ease tensions in the region, The New York Times reported, citing sources.

However, according to two officials, Iran would prefer a proposal to create a regional consortium to produce nuclear power.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi and US Special Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff, who are expected to hold talks on a potential nuclear deal in Istanbul on February 6, "are communicating directly through text messages," according to Iranian officials and an American one, the paper noted. The meeting will also involve US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner and will be attended by senior officials from Turkey, Qatar and Egypt, The New York Times added.

Trump stated on January 26 that Washington had sent a "big armada" towards Iran, and expressed hope that Tehran would engage in dialogue and make a deal, renouncing nuclear weapons. According to the US leader, Iranian officials are in serious talks with US colleagues.
