STOCKHOLM, January 14. /TASS/. A volcanic eruption triggered by an earthquake has started on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula, the Icelandic national broadcaster RUV reported, citing the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

The eruption began this morning in the southwest of Iceland, near the city of Grindavik. A state of emergency has been declared in the region.

According to the broadcaster, residents of the city of Grindavik were evacuated last night.

There are 33 active volcanic systems on the territory of Iceland. Since 2021, there have been four eruptions on the Reykjanes Peninsula: in March 2021, August 2022, July 2023 and December 2023.
