COP28 chief says final document will consider all sides’ interests

He said that a balanced result was being searched for that takes into account various positions

DUBAI, December 12. /TASS/. The final document of the 28th Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP28) will take into account the interests of all countries, including regarding the issue of fossil fuels, COP28 Director General Majid Al Suwaidi told a briefing.

When commenting on the draft of the final document, which does not contain a provision on the gradual phasing out of fossil fuels, which is why it has been criticized by most delegations, he assured that their views were heard. He added that a balanced result was being searched for that takes into account various positions.

On December 8, the UNFCCC office released the draft of the COP28 final document. Its key clause suggests four statements on a gradual fossil fuel phase-out, a discussion of which has been the key focus of the sides in the past few days. COP28 participants that are involved in final talks on the parameters of the agreement are to reach a consensus by the end of the summit on December 12, either by approving one of the proposed statements or by excluding this provision from the final version of the text.
