Police detains seven protesters in Israel

They were detained in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, the police press service said

TEL AVIV, November 6. /TASS/. Israeli police detained seven participants of rallies in Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Haifa, the police press service said.

In Tel Aviv, protesters blocked the Ayalon highway, "lit fires on the roadway, set off fireworks and damaged road infrastructure," the statement said. "After the riots began, police declared the rally illegal and began dispersing the protesters with the use of riot gear," the statement continued, noting that "so far, two protesters have been detained for disrupting order and disobeying police instructions."

"Three public order violators were detained in Jerusalem for attacking police officers and breaching cordons," the agency reported. "Two violators were detained in Haifa, one of whom is suspected of starting a bonfire on the road," the press service added.

Rallies broke out across Israel on Tuesday night after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his decision to dismiss Defense Minister Yoav Gallant. In Tel Aviv, thousands of protesters blocked the Ayalon Highway and set bonfires on the roadway. Hundreds also marched to Netanyahu's residence in Jerusalem. In Haifa, several thousand protesters blocked traffic on one of the city's main streets.

The Israeli parliamentary opposition leader Yair Lapid, who called it an "act of madness" to fire Gallant at the height of the war, was the one who called for protests following the defense minister's resignation.
