Republicans to take control over US Senate — TV

Democrats have 43 seats in the Senate so far

WASHINGTON, November 6. /TASS/. Republicans will win at least 51 seats in the US Senate in the November 5 election, taking control of the upper chamber of the US Congress, Fox News projects.

Republicans currently hold 49 Senate seats, while Democrats, together with independent candidates, have 51. The broadcaster expects that Republicans will receive at least two additional seats.

Democrats have 43 seats in the Senate so far.

To win a majority in the upper chamber of the US Congress, Republicans had to secure at least one additional seat. However, this would only be enough if they win the presidential election, too, as a Republican vice president would then have the right to vote in the Senate. If Democrats reclaim the White House, Republicans will need two new seats to control the Senate.

The United States is currently counting votes in Tuesday’s elections. Voters selected the president, governors in 11 states and two US territories, one-third of the Senate, and all members of the House of Representatives. Republican Donald Trump, who served as the 45th president from 2017 to 2021, faced Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, who has been vice president since January 2021. The winner has yet to be announced.
