Macron, Xi pledge joint efforts to address debt issues facing most vulnerable economies

PARIS, November 15. /TASS/. French President Emmanuel Macron and Chinese leader Xi Jinping vowed to work together to address the indebtedness of the world’s poorest countries, the Elysee Palace said in a communique released after a meeting between the two heads of state on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia on Tuesday.

"In the context of the current crisis, the two presidents discussed their actions to support the financing of the most vulnerable economies," the communique reads. "They expressed their determination to move forward together with the establishing of a common framework for settling debts." According to the Elysee Palace, among other things, the two leaders "discussed the particularly urgent situation in Zambia."

The French presidential office said Macron and Xi also "expressed their wish to further consolidate the strategic partnership between France and China, particularly in aeronautics, the use of nuclear energy for civilian purposes and in the food sphere." The two leaders also discussed cooperation on global issues, including climate change and the protection of biodiversity, according to the communique.

The G20 summit is underway in Indonesia’s Bali. It runs through November 16.
