Gutsul urges Putin to support Gagauzia's special status

The head of Moldova’s autonomous Gagauzia region sent the appeal through her lawyers

MOSCOW, March 27. /TASS/. The head of Moldova’s autonomous Gagauzia region, Yevgenia Gutsul, has appealed to Russian President Vladimir Putin to express unequivocal support for the autonomy's special status within Moldova.

"We also ask you, as the leader of a power that has always stood for justice, to express firm and unequivocal support for the special status of the autonomous region of Gagauz within the independent Republic of Moldova," said the appeal sent by Gutsul through her lawyers.

The proclamation of the Gagauz Republic on August 19, 1990 led to a conflict that Chisinau tried to settle by force, but Soviet troops helped to avoid bloodshed. Then representatives of Chisinau and Comrat sat down at the negotiating table, and in December 1994 the Moldovan parliament adopted a law on the special status of the Gagauz autonomy. Relations between Chisinau and Comrat escalated again after the victory of Gutsul, representing the opposition, in the election of the head of the autonomous region.
