MOSCOW, November 11. /TASS/. /TASS/. Russian tennis star Andrey Rublev moved up one spot in the ATP’s latest (Association of Tennis Professionals) Top-10 Rankings of the world’s best tennis players, based on the ATP Rankings released on Monday.
Rublev rose from 9th to 8th place in the newly published ATP rankings after reaching the quarterfinals of the 2024 ATP tournament in Metz, France, where he was forced to withdraw from the competition due to abdominal pain.
The Top-10 of the ATP Ranking List is as follows: 1st Jannik Sinner (Italy, 10,330 points), 2nd Alexander Zverev (Germany, 7,315), 3rd Carlos Alcaraz (Spain, 6,810), 4th Daniil Medvedev (Russian athlete playing under a neutral status at ATP tournaments, 4,830), 5th Taylor Fritz (United States, 4,300), 6th Novak Djokovic (Serbia, 3,910), 7th Casper Ruud (Norway, 3,855), 8th Andrey Rublev (Russian athlete playing under a neutral status at ATP tournaments, 3,760), 9th Alex de Minaur (Australia, 3,745), and 10th Grigor Dimitrov (Bulgaria, 3,350).
Russia’s Rublev, 27, is competing in international tennis tournaments under a neutral status. He has won 16 ATP singles titles and four more in men’s doubles.
He has also participated in numerous Grand Slam tournaments, although he has never advanced beyond the quarterfinals. Rublev won the gold medal in mixed doubles at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo (with teammate Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova) and also helped win the 2021 Davis Cup as part of the Russian national team.
This week, Rublev is competing in the 2024 ATP Finals after Serbia’s Djokovic announced last week his decision not to participate in the prestigious year-end ATP event.
The 2024 ATP Finals is a men’s tennis tournament held on indoor hard courts at the Inalpi Arena in Turin, Italy, from November 10 to 17, 2024. It brings together the world’s Top-8 male players annually, according to the ATP Rankings.
Russian players’ neutral status at tennis tournaments
On February 28, 2022, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) issued recommendations to international sports federations to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international tournaments, citing Moscow’s special military operation in Ukraine as the reason.
Following the IOC’s recommendations in late February 2022, most global sports federations decided to bar athletes from Russia and Belarus from all international sports tournaments.
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) ruled on March 1, 2022, to suspend the membership of the Russian and Belarusian national tennis federations and also canceled all previously scheduled tennis tournaments in the two countries.
On March 14, 2022, the ITF also confirmed its prohibition on the Russian and Belarusian national tennis teams from participating in the 2022 Davis Cup and 2022 Billie Jean King Cup.
However, the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) and the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) allowed players from Russia and Belarus to continue competing in WTA and ATP tournaments, but only under a neutral status.
