Russia to support Ethiopia in BRICS integration — ambassador

Yevgeny Terekhin emphasized that the response both in political circles and among ordinary people in Ethiopia to joining BRICS has been overwhelmingly positive

ADDIS ABABA, February 20. /TASS/. Moscow is ready to support Addis Ababa in the process of integration into the BRICS system, Russian Ambassador to Ethiopia Yevgeny Terekhin told TASS.

"The invitation to join the BRICS was perceived in Ethiopia as one of the biggest diplomatic victories in recent years. A lot of attention is being paid here to effective integration into the work of BRICS. We, as the chair of the association, will provide all possible assistance to our friends in this challenging endeavor," he said.

The diplomat emphasized that the response both in political circles and among ordinary people in Ethiopia to joining BRICS has been overwhelmingly positive.

"BRICS is an association of states with common interests and aspirations to establish a more equitable system in the political, economic, security and humanitarian fields. As an active member of the association, Ethiopia is reaping huge political dividends. Participation in BRICS also opens up new opportunities for building economic potential and utilizing the combined potential of BRICS for its own and common interests," the ambassador explained.

Terekhin recalled that the Ethiopian leadership has repeatedly declared its readiness to contribute to the development of the common potential of the association.

The decision to invite Ethiopia to BRICS was taken at the summit in Johannesburg in August 2023. Ethiopia became a full member on January 1, 2024.
