Hainan's Sanya opens plant and animal plasma quarantine center

The facility was established to better integrate the province into the global supply of bio-resources

HAIKOU /China/, 22 August. /TASS/. The city of Sanya in South China's Hainan Province has opened a quarantine center for plant and animal germplasm imported from abroad, China News Service reported.

According to the news service, the facility was set up by the customs of Haikou city (the administrative center of the region) for Hainan's more active participation in the global supply of bio-resources. The facility is located on the territory of Yazhou Bay Ccience and Technology City.

The authors of the portal remind that in Sanya is dynamically developing breeding cluster of tropical agriculture, the activities of which in accordance with the General Program for the formation of Hainan Free Trade Port should have a global reach. The new center is expected to make more intensive use of the potential of local laboratories.

According to official calculations, since 2018, China's southernmost province has secured the import of more than 1,000 types of germplasm to the People's Republic of China, including various varieties of corn, soybeans, potatoes and rice, among others. The facility is expected to strengthen the safety of agricultural, forestry, fishery and livestock projects, and help prevent the spread of epidemics, weeds and insect pests.

According to Liu Fusyu, director of the quarantine center, the organization he heads will also speed up the process of customs procedures for importing these products. He said the work of this structure will be carried out with a focus on introducing the latest equipment, "the most flexible mechanisms and the most advanced technologies."

Hainan plays an important role in research and production efforts to improve yields and develop new varieties of many crops. Sanya is home to a thriving seed cluster, which will become China's breeding "Silicon Valley" in the future. The provincial authorities encourage international projects in this field, and regularly organize exhibitions and conferences with the participation of leading specialists from all over the world, including Russia.
