UNITED NATIONS, September 23. /TASS/. Armenia has a powerful pro-Western lobby operating to undermine Russia’s influence, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said at a press conference following the 78th session of the UN General Assembly.
"The fact is that Armenia, like some other countries of the former Soviet Union, has a mighty lobby represented by a layer of non-governmental organizations (established including through numerous Western foundations), and they promote the interests of the United States and its allies. These interests involve undermining Russia’s influence there. This is a fact. There are lots of such organizations there," he said.
"We view this as artificially whipped-up passions. I will repeat that we know who takes an interest in this and who is in charge," the minister added.
The Russian top diplomat pointed out that Russia’s influence in the region "is growing."
"Many things are getting clearer right now before our eyes," he emphasized.
Lavrov added that the Armenian leadership "periodically adds oil to the fire."
In addition, the foreign minister indicated the Russian side’s strong belief that the Armenians link their history to Russia and other friendly countries, but "not to those who come from across the ocean.".
