GORKI, February 1. /TASS/. The Capitol riots have become a retribution for the United States’ support of color revolutions in other countries, the deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, Dmitry Medvedev, said.
"To a certain extent, this is retribution for the Americans’ traditional support of various riots, known as color revolutions, which led to illegitimate toppling of governments in other countries, and for treating them as an absolutely normal process if they correspond to US interests," he said in an interview with the Russian media.
"However, when similar events started to unfold on their own territory, inside their own country, this was naturally treated as a crime against the state, with hundreds of criminal cases launched and a huge number of people arrested. And, naturally, they are trying to bring the situation under control, under a very tough control," the Russian official continued.
Medvedev described the events on the Capitol Hill as a tragedy, which cannot be justified, and must in no way be treated as a reason for schadenfreude.
However, according to the deputy head of the Russian Security Council, this situation demonstrates the need "to conduct honest policies" on the international arena. Besides, it shows the need to avoid "toppling governments through illegitimate means, to organize various types of ‘maidans,’ and to subsequently hail the fact that an illegitimate change of power had taken place and those who rose to power are now trying to, for example, make friends with the United States," Medvedev added.
On January 6, Donald Trump’s supporters stormed the Capitol Building in Washington DC to stop lawmakers from officially certifying the results of the November presidential election in a last-ditch attempt to prevent Democrat Joe Biden from becoming the new president. One protester was shot dead during the unrest. In addition, three others died, the causes of their deaths were qualified as medical emergencies. Democrat lawmakers accused Trump of fanning the flames of insurrection and demanded that he be immediately removed from office. Some Republicans backed the move.
