Azerbaijan's ruling party nominates Aliyev as presidential candidate

Election campaigning will begin 23 days before the voting day, that is, on January 15

BAKU, December 15. /TASS/. The ruling New Azerbaijan Party nominated incumbent President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev as its presidential candidate for the early elections to be held on February 7, 2024, Azerbaijan's Trend agency reported on Friday.

The party's board held an extended meeting, after which Aliyev's candidacy was unanimously supported.

Election campaigning will begin 23 days before the voting day, that is, on January 15. A day before the elections, a day of pre-silence is declared, when any campaigning in favor of certain candidates is prohibited.

According to the current Constitution of Azerbaijan, the president of the country is elected for a term of 7 years, there are no restrictions on the number of terms. The last presidential elections in Azerbaijan were held in April 2018, where Aliyev won with 86.22% of voters voted for him and a turnout of 74.5%.
