India’s share in Russia’s weapons exports up by 16% in six months — official

According to Viktor Yevtukhov, the construction of project 11356 multi-role frigates is one of the basic projects of Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation

MOSCOW, December 9. /TASS/. Russia and India continue to ramp up defense ties, with India’s share in Russia’s exports of weapons and combat vehicles going up by 15% in the past six months, a high-ranking Russian presidential administration official said.

"India’s share in the export of Russian weapons and hardware has increased by 15% in the past six months alone," Viktor Yevtukhov, head of the presidential directorate for state policy in the defense sector, said on the occasion of transferring a project 11356 frigate to the Indian Navy.

According to Yevtukhov, the construction of project 11356 multi-role frigates is a cornerstone of Russian-Indian military-technical cooperation. "These deals have demonstrated the Russian defense sector’s research and industrial potential and facilitated the development of the Russian school of surface military ship-building," he stressed.

He recalled that six frigates of this project were supplied to the Indian side from 2007 to 2013. The seventh such frigate was transferred today at the Kaliningrad-based Yantar plant of the United Shipbuilding Corporation and the eighth one will be built at this plant and supplied to India next year. The ninth and tenth frigates will be built in India, with Russia’s technical support.

"This complies with the key trends of Russia-Indian military-technical cooperation, which is developing on the basis of long-term contracts and with a focus on localizing the production of Russian weapons and vehicles at Indian enterprises. Overall, Russia continues to be India’s leading partner in the defense sector. And not only because we have a vast potential inherited from the former Soviet Union but also thanks to joint work today. Our countries have more than 200 joint defense projects," Yevtukhov added.
