MOSCOW, October 17. /TASS/. Orcas with calves, who swam into Russia’s Amur River during the spawning season, will leave for the Sea of Okhotsk after the hunting season, Svetlana Radionova, the head of Russia’s Federal Service for Supervision of Natural Resources (Rosprirodnadzor), said on her Telegram channel on Monday, citing Russian scientists.
"Scientists have explained the reasons for the appearance of orcas with two calves in the Amur River. According to researchers of the The A.V. Zhirmunsky National Scientific Center of Marine Biology (NSCMB), it is due to the active spawning of chum salmon: the animals explore their hunting grounds," the report said.
It is noted that marine mammals are safe, their life and health is not threatened by anything. "They have not run aground or become entangled in fishing nets. Nothing needs to be done. Orcas can stay in fresh water for up to 15 days," the report specified.
In addition, Radionova published information from the Russian Federal Research Institute Of Fisheries and Oceanography, according to which "at the end of the hunting season orcas will independently return to the Sea of Okhotsk.".
