Russia’s Krasnoyarsk nuclear sub continues sea trials — Sevmash chief

The Project 955A strategic nuclear-powered submarine, the Generalissimo Suvorov, is now being prepared for commissioning

MOSCOW, November 1. /TASS/. Second serial Project 885 multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine, the Krasnoyarsk, is currently undergoing sea trials, the CEO of the submarnine’s manufacturer Sevmash has told TASS.

"This year, we have completed the trials of the Project 09852 research nuclear-powered submarine, the Belgorod, which has already been delivered to the customer. The Project 955A strategic nuclear-powered submarine, the Generalissimo Suvorov, is now being prepared for commissioning, and the Project 885M multipurpose nuclear-powered submarine, the Krasnoyarsk, is now undergoing sea trials," said Mikhail Budnichenko, the director general of the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC).

An anonymous shipbuilding source told TASS on June 27 that the Krasnoyarsk had been deployed to the White Sea for the first time for shipbuilders’ sea trials.

The Krasnoyarsk is the second serial-produced and third-built Project 885M (Yasen-M) submarine. It was laid down in 2014 and launched on July 30, 2021.

The submarine was developed by the St. Petersburg-based Malakhit Design Bureau. Currently, six Project 885M submarines are at various stages of their construction at the Sevmash Shipyard. The Project 885M lead nuclear-powered submarine Kazan was delivered to the Russian Navy on May 7, 2021. Project 885/885M submarines are armed with Kalibr-PL (SS-N-27 Sizzler) and Oniks (SS-N-26 Strobile) cruise missiles as their basic strike weapons.
