TEL AVIV, March 21. /TASS/. Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has ordered the army to take permanent control over additional territories in the Gaza Strip, saying that parts of the enclave could be annexed if the radical Palestinian movement Hamas does not release Israeli hostages, The Jerusalem Post reported.
"I have instructed the IDF to seize additional areas in Gaza, evacuate the population, and expand security zones around Gaza to protect Israeli communities and IDF soldiers. The more Hamas persists in its refusal to release the hostages, the more territory it will lose, which will be annexed to Israel," the newspaper quoted Katz as saying.
"If the hostages are not released, Israel will continue to take more and more territory in the [Gaza] Strip for permanent control," the minister added.
On March 18, the Israeli army launched massive attacks on the enclave. The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu explained that the radical Palestinian movement Hamas had rejected the proposals put forward at the talks by the mediators and the special envoy of US President Steven Witkoff, saying that the goal of the operation in Gaza was the release of all hostages. The radicals blamed Israel and the United States for the resumption of hostilities.
