Hamas, Islamic Jihad react to new Palestinian government

Both sides stressed that any such measure should be implemented exclusively as the results of a comprehensive national consensus

CAIRO, March 30. /TASS/. Palestinian authorities must take any political steps only after reaching a comprehensive national consensus, Hamas Political Bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh and Ziyad al-Nakhalah, Secretary General of the Islamic Jihad, said during a meeting in Tehran amid the news of the formation of a new Palestinian government.

"The sides stressed that they do not accept any political steps creating a new situation in the Gaza Strip, far from the desires and aspirations of the Palestinian people. Any such measure should be implemented exclusively as the results of a comprehensive national consensus," Hamas’ official Telegram channel quoted the meeting’s final statement as saying.

Earlier, Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas approved the new cabinet led by Mohammad Mustafa, former Chairman of the Palestine Investment Fund (PIF). The cabinet’s agenda includes providing aid to Palestinians, above all, the residents of the Gaza Strip, as well as rebuilding the embattled enclave and Palestinian territories in the West Bank.
