Turkey hopes for settlement of disagreements between US and Russia on INF Treaty

ISTANBUL, February 4. /TASS/. Turkey hopes that Russia and the US will reach new agreements in light of Washington and Moscow’s decision to suspend the implementation of their agreements under the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF Treaty). Deputy Chairman of the Justice and Development Party (AKP, the party is led by Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan) Cevdet Yilmaz told TASS about it on Monday.

"Turkey wants peace without nuclear weapons. We hope that in light of these events Russia and the US will manage to reach new agreements which will positively affect global security," he said.

On Friday US President Donald Trump and US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo stated that Washington suspends the implementation of its obligations under the INF Treaty on February 2, and half a year later will stop being its participant if Russia does not make any steps to ensure a return to the implementation of the obligations under the treaty. On Saturday Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the suspension of participation in the treaty. He ordered not to initiate negotiations with Washington on this issue anymore and highlighted that the American side should be adequate to equal and substantial dialogue.
