Kremlin’s New Year’s tree says goodbye, as it set off for recycling

According to Yelena Krylova, traditionally the tree will be recycled, but no decision has been made so far as to what will be made from the wood

MOSCOW, January 27. /TASS/. Russia’s main New Year’s tree, which had graced Cathedral Square since late December, has bid farewell to the Kremlin and is heading off to be recycled, Presidential Property Department Spokesperson Yelena Krylova told TASS on Friday.

"More than 1,000 decorations and nearly 2 kilometers of strings of lights have been removed, packed and sent to storage," Krylova said, noting that the tree had been cut into parts and taken out from the Kremlin grounds.

According to her, traditionally the tree will be recycled, but no decision has been made so far as to what will be made from the wood. In previous years, it served to make ice hockey sticks for young athletes and various souvenirs.

Right in the middle of the Kremlin’s Cathedral Square, a festive tree has been put up every year since December 1996. In mid-December 2022, a 95-year-old, 27-meter-tall fir tree was felled in the Moscow Region and delivered to light up the Kremlin.
