BEIJING, November 15. /TASS/. Chinese President Xi Jinping’s vision for the country includes building a society with strong family values, one that encourages having children.
In an article published in the journal Qushi, Xi emphasized the need to "promote the creation of a society that views childbirth and child-rearing in a positive light." He also stated, "It is essential to place great importance on traditional family values, cultivate a modern culture of marriage and childbearing, and promote reforms in marital customs."
China's population decreased by 2.08 million in 2023, and currently stands at a little under 1.41 billion people.
Last year, authorities registered 9.02 million newborns, while 11.10 million people died. The birth rate and mortality rate were 6.39 and 7.87 per thousand, respectively.
Since the 1970s, China has implemented a "one family, one child" policy to limit births. However, due to a sharp decline in birthrates and an aging population, the government began to gradually lift these restrictions. On January 1, 2016, a law went into effect allowing each family to have two children. In May 2021, the authorities permitted families to have up to three children.
