Ukraine to halt Russian gas transit on January 1, 2025 — Ukrainian PM

The restart of transit via the Ukrainian gas transportation system is possible at a request of the European Commission if this is not Russian gas, Denis Shmygal said

MOSCOW, December 20. /TASS/. Ukraine will terminate Russian gas transit at 07:00 a.m. local time (05:00 a.m. GMT) as the five-year contract will end, Prime Minister of Ukraine Denis Shmygal said.

"We understand at the moment that the gas transit agreement expires on January 1, 2025. Transit will be physically shut off at 7 o’clock in the morning in view of the end of this agreement," the prime minister said.

The restart of transit via the Ukrainian gas transportation system is possible at a request of the European Commission if this is not Russian gas, he said at the same time. Ukraine will also have to continue Russian oil transit under the Energy Charter treaty, Shmygal added.

Ukraine banned any trade operations with Russia in February 2022, except gas and oil transit. The transit agreement between Naftogaz of Ukraine and Gazprom was made at the turn of 2019 for the period of five years.
