LAS, OIC to ask UN Security Council to stop Gaza conflict

The countries of the League of Arab States and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation have called for the release of all people taken hostage or detained as a result of further escalation of the Middle East conflict

DUBAI, November 11. /TASS/. Arab and Islamic countries will appeal to the UN Security Council to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip, the League of Arab States (LAS) and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) said in a joint final statement.

"[The sides agree] to ask the [UN] Security Council to take a final and legally binding decision to stop the aggression of the occupying power (Israel - TASS), which violates international humanitarian law," the document said.

Arab and Islamic states call on the international community to stop arms exports to Israel. "We call on all countries to stop exporting arms and ammunition to the occupation authorities (Israel - TASS), which are used by the army and settlers to kill Palestinian citizens and destroy their homes, hospitals, schools, mosques and churches," the document said.

The countries of LAS and OIC have called for the release of all people taken hostage or detained as a result of further escalation of the Middle East conflict. "We reaffirm the need for the release of all prisoners, detainees and civilians and condemn the crimes committed by Israel against thousands of Palestinian prisoners. We call on the international community and relevant international organizations to exert pressure [on Israel] to stop these crimes and condemn those who committed them," the statement said.

Arab and Islamic countries will ask the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to investigate Israel for using weapons banned by international conventions. "Condemning the use of internationally banned white phosphorus munitions in Israel's attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, and condemning Israel's repeated statements and threats to return Lebanon to the 'stone age,' we deem it necessary to turn to the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons to conduct an appropriate investigation," the document said.

The countries of LAS and OIC condemn the policy of double standards towards Israel and the Gaza Strip. "We condemn the double standards in the application of international law and warn that this duplicity seriously undermines the credibility of states that protect Israel and place it above the law. Moreover, its implementation clearly demonstrates the selectivity of the system of law enforcement at the international level," the statement said.
