Republicans winning House, control of Senate still unclear

On the whole, no incidents were reported during the voting day

NEW YORK, November 9. /TASS/. The first results of the US midterm elections showed that Republicans are winning the House of Representatives, with control of the Senate still undetermined.

House

All the 432 House seats were up for election at the midterms, with 218 seats needed for control of the lower house of the US parliament. According to preliminary results, Republicans won at least 99 seats, and Democrats - 55, the New York Times reported. The results in the majority of polling stations in the country’s northeast traditionally tilted toward Democrats and in the West Coast, primarily in California, have yet to be announced.

Senate

Control of the Senate remains far from determined: Democrats racked up victories in two key states, Arizona and Pennsylvania. According to estimates by the media, Democrats are winning the Colorado Senate race and can still win the contest in Wisconsin, where polls previously showed the vote preference for Republicans.

Both parties can still win control of the Senate.

Governors

Gubernatorial elections met expectations, with Democrats mostly winning in the northeast. With 32% of the votes counted, Democrat Kathy Hochul has scored almost two times as many votes as her Republican opponent. However, Republicans are winning the race in the northeastern states of Vermont and New Hampshire, according to preliminary data.

Republican Ron DeSantis won governor’s race in Florida, while Greg Abbott, a Republican, defeated his Democratic rival in Texas. No data on California is available yet.

Problems

On the whole, no incidents were reported during the voting day. However, vote tabulators malfunctioned in Arizona, New Jersey and Pennsylvania.

The worst voting machine problems were registered in Maricopa County in Arizona, where over 4 million people live, or more than half of the population of a key state for control of the Senate. Republicans wrote on social media that far from all voters had managed to cast their vote before the polls closed.

`Protest, protest, protest!’

Former US President Donald Trump has already criticized the election process in Arizona and Pennsylvania as well as in Detroit and Michigan, where data errors were reported.

"The Absentee Ballot situation in Detroit is really bad. People are showing up to vote only to be told, `sorry, you have already voted.’ This is happening in large numbers, elsewhere as well. Protest, Protest, Protest!" Trump posted on Truth Social.
