111 opposition activists detained in Yerevan on suspicion of hooliganism — police

After the incident, the opposition leaders accused the police of "excessive use of force" against the activists

YEREVAN, May 30. /TASS/. More than 110 opposition activists have been detained in Yerevan on suspicion of hooliganism, a police spokesman told TASS on Monday.

"A total of 111 people, who are suspected of hooliganism, have been taken to various police stations," the spokesman said.

The activists of the Resistance opposition movement were detained near the building of the Armenian government in central Yerevan when they tried to block entryways to the building, not let opposition lawmakers enter it. The lawmakers said they wanted to meet with government officials to speak about the Nagorno-Karabakh problem.

After the incident, the opposition leaders accused the police of "excessive use of force" against the activists.

Grassroots protests of opposition parties have been held in Armenia since May 1. Opposition activists claim that Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan is planning to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan, recognizing Nagorno-Karabakh as part of that country. Protests in Yerevan are staged practically every day.
