Three Hainan cities ranked among China’s top ten in air quality

The ranking was based on the level of air pollution during the first three quarters of 2021

HAIKOU /China/, February 1. /TASS/. Hainan Danzhou topped the national ranking of Chinese cities in terms of air quality, the Sansha Weishi TV channel reported.

The rating includes 336 settlements. It was prepared by experts from the Shanghai Urban Planning & Design Research Institute and the Urban Development Institute at Fudan University.  The ranking took into account the level of air pollution during the first three quarters of 2021.

Apart from Danzhou, two other cities in Hainan province were in the top ten: Sanya was ranked third and Haikou (the province's administrative center) was ranked fifth. The air quality index in Danzhou was below 100 points from January to September for more than 90 % of the time and was characterized as "excellent".

Haikou also topped the ranking among China's 36 largest cities. In the first nine months of last year, only one day did the air quality level there fall to the "light pollution" mark.

In February 2021, the PRC Ministry of Environmental Protection set a target concentration of fine particulate matter PM 2.5 in the air at 34.5 micrograms per cubic meter. In 2020, the PM 2.5 concentration target was 35 micrograms per cubic meter. At the same time, the maximum allowable standard of the World Health Organization is 25 micrograms per cubic meter.
