MOSCOW, February 29. /TASS/. Russia continues to proactively develop the Northern Sea Route ad invites foreign companies and countries to actively use it, President Vladimir Putin said in the State of the Nation Address to the Federal Assembly.

"Further development of the Northern Sea Route is in the focus. We invite foreign logistical companies, countries to actively use capabilities of this global transport corridor. Thirty-six million metric tons of goods passed along it last year," the Russian leader said. "This is five times more than the record figure in times of the Soviet Union," Putin noted.

The increase of cargo throughput in northern Russian ports, including the Murmansk hub, provision of year-round navigation along the Northern Sea Route, and the Arctic fleet expansion are also in plans, the head of state added.
