Syria must not turn into hotbed of terrorism — top Iranian diplomat

According to Abbas Araghchi, the United States and Israel "are using these groups to generate threats to Syria’s security and divert the attention [of the global community] from the Zionist regime’s crimes in Palestine and Lebanon"

DUBAI, December 2. /TASS/. Terrorists can not be allowed to thrive in Syria, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said.

"We share a common position [with Turkey] that Syria must not become a safe haven for terrorists again," the Iranian foreign ministry quoted him as saying after talks with his Turkish counterpart, Hakan Fidan.

"According to our intelligence, terrorist groups operating in Syria maintain close ties and coordinate their actions with the United States and the Zionist regime (Israel - TASS). So, one must not forget the role the Zionists play in the project to destabilize the region," Araghchi stated.

According to the top Iranian diplomat, the United States and Israel "are using these groups to generate threats to Syria’s security and divert the attention [of the global community] from the Zionist regime’s crimes in Palestine and Lebanon." He vowed that Tehran would continue supporting Syria’s government, army, and people in their fight against terrorism.

Units of the Jabhat al-Nusra extremist group (outlawed in Russia) staged a large-scale attack on Syria’s northern governorates in the early hours on November 27. According to the Syrian government army command, the terrorists attempted to seize a number of neighborhoods and military facilities and attacked positions of government forces. The Syrian army launched an operation to repel the attack.

On November 30, the Syrian army command said that government forces were delivering strikes on terrorists’ positions in Aleppo. According to the Syrian defense ministry, the army had to regroup to save the lives of civilians and its troops and get prepared for a counterattack.
