Russian MFA describes cooperation with ASEAN as foreign policy priority

ASEAN is one of the key elements of the regional architecture in the Asia-Pacific region, Russian Foreign Ministry said

MOSCOW, August 8. /TASS/. Cooperation with the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) is one of Moscow’s foreign policy priorities in Asia, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said in a statement marking ASEAN Day.

"ASEAN is one of the key elements of the regional architecture in the Asia-Pacific region. An entire system of multilateral mechanisms related to the association, involving Russia and other leading world powers, has been established. <...> Developing cooperation with ASEAN is one of Russia's foreign policy priorities in Asia," the statement reads.

ASEAN was founded in Bangkok on August 8, 1967. Its founding members were Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and the Philippines. They were later joined by Brunei in 1984, Vietnam in 1995, Laos and Myanmar in 1997, Cambodia in 1999, and East Timor in 2025. The member states celebrate ASEAN Day annually on August 8.
