BUDAPEST, November 8. /TASS/. EU leaders at a summit in Budapest have extended the European Union's military training mission for Ukraine by two years and allocated it a budget of €409 million, the European Council said in a statement on Ukraine.

"The Council today adopted a decision extending the mandate of the European Union Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine) for a further two years, until 15 November 2026, with a budget allocation of nearly €409 million for the period from 14 November 2024 to 15 November 2026," the statement reads.

The document emphasizes that the EU mission is its "key tool for EU's military support to Ukraine, with its core objective of contributing to enhancing the military capacity" of Kiev. The statement adds that it will work in close coordination with NATO to promote Ukraine's security and train the country's troops.

Earlier, EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell stated that since the launch of its mission on October 17, 2022, EU countries have trained 60,000 Ukrainian soldiers and officers to fight against Russia. Following the first day of the summit, several EU leaders said that after Donald Trump's victory in the US presidential election, EU countries should increase assistance to Ukraine, expressing hope to continue cooperation on this issue with the future Republican administration in the United States.
