MOSCOW, March 4. /TASS/. Russia is ready for a potential new avian flu pandemic, including in terms of vaccines’ development, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Gennady Onishchenko told TASS.

"Are we ready? Yes, we managed to make a new vaccine every year. It takes several months for us to prepare a new vaccine from a new strain," the Academician said. "We will definitely prepare diagnostics very quickly when a new strain appears, the pandemic one in the first place, because it is impossible to make a diagnosis without diagnostics," Onishchenko noted.

The expert does not rule out that a new pandemic will emerge, noting that they have a certain periodicity.

"We are skilled in diagnostics; we are able to make a vaccine. The only point giving rise for doubts, and these are more theoretical ones, is whether we have drugs at that time to cure the persons affected if they are not vaccinated, if there is no immunity," he added.
