Putin questions logic behind Volkswagen leaving Russia

The Russian president stressed that Russia allowed its German partners to operate under free market conditions in the country

MOSCOW, December 4. /TASS/. Volkswagen could have made a lot of money had it stayed in the Russian market, Russian President Vladimir Putin said at the 15th VTB Russia Calling! Investment Forum.

"For decades, we have maintained very good relations with Germany. We understood each other very well. German companies always focused on investing in long-term production rather than chasing quick profits. So why did Volkswagen leave the Russian market?" Putin wondered.

"They could have continued operating here, selling their products with high levels of localization, and even supplying components—achieving excellent revenues in the process," he said.

Putin stressed that Russia allowed its German partners to operate under free market conditions in the country.

"We have never taken any non-market [steps], any non-market regulation measures, <…> we never created for our German friends in the Russian market such [hurdles] as were created in other areas, in particular, investigations in the field of environment and so on," he noted.

The Russian President noted that, as a result of the exit, "it was the employees of Volkswagen that were hit hardest. Now, thousands of them are going on strike because their enterprises are closing."
