Ukrainian lawmakers want to ban contemporary Russian music

The ban does not apply to music by those who quitted Russian citizenship to acquire Ukrainian nationality or to those Russian musicians who spoke against the special military operation in Ukraine

KIEV, May 30. /TASS/. Several Ukrainian lawmakers have initiated a bill on banning modern Russian music. The bill was posted on the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) website on Monday.

According to the bill, the ban applies to pieces of music composed by contemporary musicians and singers who are Russian citizens or were Russian citizens after 1991. The ban does not apply to music by those who quitted Russian citizenship to acquire Ukrainian nationality. The ban is not applicable to those Russian musicians who spoke against the special military operation in Ukraine. The lawmakers suggest a list of such musicians and singers be drawn. To be entered on this list, a Russian musician is to file a corresponding application with Ukraine’s Security Service.

The bill was initiated by lawmakers with various parties, including chairman of the committee for humanitarian and information policy Nikita Poturayev, lawmakers Sofia Fedina and Vladimir Vyatrovich, who is known for his extreme Russophobic views.

A similar bill was registered in Rada in April but has not been passed.
