US basketball player Brittney Griner is not hostage, she violated law — Kremlin spokesman

When asked whether Brittney Griner could be called a hostage, the presidential spokesman disagreed with this wording

NEW YORK, June 20./TASS/. US basketball player Brittney Griner, arrested in Russia on charges of an attempt to smuggle drugs into the country, violated the law, hence she cannot be called hostage, Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov said in an interview with MSNBC released on Monday.

"There's a number of countries where you cannot enter with any drugs. Actually, it is prosecuted by law, so we can do nothing about that," Peskov said. "And is prosecuted by Russian laws. And Russia is not a single country in the world that have quite strict laws in that sense," he added.

When asked whether Brittney Griner could be called a hostage, the presidential spokesman disagreed with this wording. "I would strongly disagree with that. We cannot call her hostage. Why should we call her hostage?" he asked.

US basketball player Brittney Griner was arrested in Russia over suspicions of smuggling cannabis oil into Russia. She is a two-time World Champion and a two-time Olympic Champion. Before the arrest, she played for Yekaterinburg’s UGMK.

On May 13, the then White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki said without elaborating that the Washington administration was taking measures towards the release of the US basketball player.
