Russia informs IAEA of increased Ukrainian attacks on Zaporozhye plant’s host city

The six-reactor, six-gigawatt Zaporozhye NPP, located in the city of Energodar, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe

YEKATERINBURG, November 15. /TASS/. Russia’s Rosatom State Atomic Energy Corporation has informed the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) of massive Ukrainian attacks on the city of Energodar, which hosts the Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant (ZNPP), Rosatom CEO Alexey Likhachev said.

On November 14, the Ukrainian military’s shelling of the ZNPP host city targeted a residential area, killing a civilian.

"Ukrainian forces not only continue their attacks but are also increasing them. Apart from drones, they are now also using cannon artillery. This definitely means an escalation of threats coming from the Ukrainian armed forces; nine strikes were recorded yesterday," Likhachev told reporters during a working trip to the Urals city of Yekaterinburg. "Of course, we have informed the International Atomic Energy Agency and the entire international community about it," he added.

The six-reactor, six-gigawatt Zaporozhye NPP, located in the city of Energodar, is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe. Russian forces took control of the facility in late February 2022. Since then, the Ukrainian army has been shelling both residential areas in Energodar and the premises of the power plant using drones, heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems.

All six units of the plant are in cold shutdown, they are not generating electricity. The facility’s equipment is maintained in accordance with all necessary regulations under strict control of radiation and nuclear safety standards and under the supervision of IAEA experts.
