TOKYO, March 14. /TASS/. A 5.8 magnitude earthquake that struck the northeastern parts of Japan did not cause any emergency situations at local nuclear facilities, local emergencies services reported.
Tokyo Electric Power reported in particular that the earthquake did not cause any damage at the shutdown emergency nuclear power plant Fukushima-1 and there were no reported altercations in the level of radiation near the plant.
A magnitude 5.8 earthquake rocked Japan’s northeastern prefecture of Fukushima in the early hours of Friday, according to the country’s meteorological agency.
Before the tremors, which were centered in Fukushima, locals received warnings from the national earthquake alert system. Seismologists issued a warning of a tsunami following the quake, but withdrew it just minutes later. The tremors were felt in Tokyo.
There have been no reports of casualties or damage, or any emergencies at the mothballed Fukushima nuclear power plant.
