Turkish, US top diplomats discuss global agenda at Munich Conference

A source in the Turkish diplomatic bodystated that the two "discussed in detail possible developments" in the context of the settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine

ANKARA, February 14. /TASS/. Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan held a meeting with new US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, a source in the Turkish diplomatic body told TASS on Friday.

"Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan met with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for talks on February 14 on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference," the source said, adding that this was the first meeting between the top diplomats since the new US administration was formed.

"Issues regarding trade and economic relations [between Turkey and the United States] as well as in the defense sphere were discussed," the source said. "Both sides also assessed the situation in Syria, developments in the Gaza Strip, and issues related to the Ukrainian-Russian military conflict."

He also stated that the two "discussed in detail possible developments" in the context of the settlement of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

US Department of State’s Spokesperson Tammy Bruce announced earlier that Rubio is set to travel to Germany, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on February 13-18 to discuss the release of hostages kept by the radical Hamas movement, ceasefire agreements in the Gaza Strip and counter-actions against Iran.
