SUKHUM, February 19. /TASS/. Abkhazia’s presidential administration has refuted media reports that Abkhazian President Aslan Bzhania is discussing the country’s status during his working visit to Moscow.
"On February 14, the Abkhazian president left for Moscow. During his working visit, Aslan Bzhania is holding a number of meetings at the Russian presidential administration. The republic’s citizens were timely informed about the president’s visit to Moscow and the goals of this visit but false reports about the discussion of Abkhazia’s status are being disseminated in periodicals and on the internet. Regrettably, these reports are spread by some people and public organizations in Abkhazia," the administration’s department for relations with the mass media said on Sunday.
"Public appeals based on unverified and false information about the alleged discussion of Abkhazia’s status can be considered as an attempt by some citizens and public associations to groundlessly accuse the Abkhazian leadership of undermining the basics of the constitutional system," it said. "The constitutional system of Abkhazia, as a sovereign, democratic, and law-ruled state which emerged historically based on the people’s right to free self-determination, is enshrined in law and is not a subject for discussion. President Aslan Bzhania fulfills his duties in strict compliance with Abkhazia’s laws and constitution, of which he is a guarantor."
On Sunday, a number of public organization and popular politicians in Abkhazia spoke up against the country’s possible accession to Russia, saying that the format of the existing relations with Russia needs no changes as it satisfied both sides.
