VATICAN, March 29. /TASS/. Pope Francis is undergoing a medical check-up at a hospital in Rome. The duration of his hospitalization has not been announced.
"This afternoon, the Holy Father went to (Fondazione Agostino - TASS) Gemelli for some previously scheduled check-ups," Holy See Press Office Director Matteo Bruni reported on Wednesday.
Earlier on Wednesday, the pontiff held a collective audience, as he does every Wednesday.
In July 2021, Pope Francis, 86, underwent a surgery for his diverticular disease. As the pope himself later admitted, a Vatican nurse persuaded him to have the operation. It took him ten days to recover from the anesthesia. Despite the successful surgery, the disease returned, but in a milder form. A TASS correspondent learned from Vatican sources that the pontiff’s condition needs to be monitored. In addition, Pope Francis suffers from severe pain in his knee, so he is in fact confined to a wheelchair. However, this does not prevent him from traveling. He last traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan in late January. A visit to Hungary is planned for the end of April.
