NEW YORK, November 6. /TASS/. Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, 84, won reelection to the lower chamber of the US Congress in California’s 11th Congressional District, the Associated Press said.
Pelosi has been a congresswoman from California in the House of Representatives since 1987.
In 2022, Pelosi visited Taiwan, drawing sharp criticism from China which launched a large-scale military exercise around the island in response. Beijing described the visit as a provocation that it said was sending a wrong signal to Taiwanese separatists. A day later, China imposed sanctions on the House speaker and her family as it froze several bilateral intergovernmental mechanisms for cooperation with Washington. Official Beijing considers Taiwan a province of the People’s Republic of China, a position shared by a majority of countries, including Russia.
According to NBC, Pelosi prompted incumbent US President Joe Biden to drop out of the presidential race on July 21 as she also played a key role in endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris as his replacement.
The United States is currently counting votes in Tuesday’s elections. Voters selected the president, governors in 11 states and two US territories, one-third of the Senate, and all members of the House of Representatives. Republican Donald Trump faced Democratic Harris.
