THE HAGUE, February 17. /TASS/. Europe must take responsibility for its own future and stop relying on the United States, especially now that Donald Trump took office, Gideon van Meijeren, a lawmaker with the Dutch far-right Forum for Democracy party, told TASS.
"The first steps of President Trump mark a decisive break with the status quo of the American political establishment," he said. "His focus on national sovereignty, energy independence, and direct diplomacy rather than globalist institutions aligns with our vision for a world of strong, self-determined nations. Trump's executive orders, from dismantling DEI policies to withdrawing from the WHO and the Paris Climate Agreement, demonstrate that he is serious about restoring America's strength. This is a wake-up call for Europe: we can no longer rely on the US as a crutch and must take responsibility for our own destiny."
The worst-case scenario for them is that Trump's policies expose the EU’s weaknesses: its dependence on US military protection, its ideological obsession with climate alarmism, and its inability to function as a true geopolitical player. For countries like the Netherlands, Trump’s presidency does not have to be a threat — as long as our leaders recognize the shifting geopolitical landscape and actively work towards a constructive relationship with his administration. However, if our leaders stubbornly cling to the failed policies of the past instead of adapting to this new reality, they risk isolating our country and undermining our ability to navigate the changing global order effectively," he emphasized.
