UNSC postpones voting on non-permanent members’ Middle East resolution — source

Voting may now take place on Monday, March 25

UNITED NATIONS, March 23. /TASS/. The UN Security Council has postponed voting on a Middle East draft resolution drawn up by a number of non-permanent members, which calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, a UN diplomatic source told TASS.

Voting, which was initially set for March 23, may now take place on Monday, March 25.

Russian Permanent Representative to the United Nations Vasily Nebenzya earlier expressed support for the document. The draft resolution demands an immediate truce for the month of Ramadan, which would lead to a permanent and sustainable ceasefire, as well as the release of all hostages without preconditions.

On March 22, Russia and China vetoed a US-drafted resolution, which highlighted the need for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East but made no such demands. Apart from Russia and China, Algeria also voted against the draft resolution, while Ecuador, France, Japan, Malta, Mozambique, South Korea, Slovenia, Sierra Leone, Switzerland, the US and the US voted in its favor.
