Major German television channels ARD and ZDF to resume broadcasting from Moscow studios

On March 5, WDR announced that ARD and ZDF would suspend broadcasting from their studios in Russia due to the adoption of a new media law in Russia

BERLIN, March 11. /TASS/. Major German television channels ARD and ZDF will resume broadcasting from their Moscow studios after a hiatus that followed adoption of a new Russian law, the WDR broadcaster said on Friday.

"Based on the assessment [of the situation], ARD and ZDF, also following consultations with partners in the EBU, have decided to resume coverage of events from Moscow studios on the political, economic and social situation in Russia, however, reporting on military events in Ukraine will be done from other studios of the two public broadcasters," WDR said in a statement.

It said ARD and ZDF reserved the right to revise the decision at any time.

Moscow-based reporters of ARD and ZDF will broadcast information about decisions by the Russian government, as well as the reaction of civil society, for example, protests against the Russian military operation in Ukraine, the reaction of the Russian elite, or the impact of sanctions on the daily life of Russians. The special conditions for broadcasting from Russia are made transparent.

ARD’s Moscow studio is managed by WDR.

On March 5, WDR announced that ARD and ZDF would suspend broadcasting from their studios in Russia due to the adoption of a new media law in Russia.

On March 4, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law introducing criminal liability for the dissemination of false information regarding the Russian armed forces. The law introduced article 207.3 into the Russian Criminal Code, which is entitled "Public dissemination of knowingly false information about the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation." It stipulates imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 1.5 million rubles. But if people perpetrate the infraction using their official position, or to gain a profit, or out of political, ideological, racial, national or religious hatred or enmity, they are facing a harsher punishment of up to 10 years in jail or a fine of up to 5 million rubles. If the fake information caused serious consequences, the term of imprisonment will be longer: from 10 to 15 years.
